Product description

Cockatoo is a prescription scalp treatment that happens to be a styling clay. Minoxidil 5%, the active used for pattern hair loss, is carried in a matte kaolin clay base: you work it through the thinning areas as you style in the morning, and the minoxidil sits against the scalp through the day. We believe it is the first minoxidil styling clay on the market.

The finish is part of the point. Wet-look gels flatten hair against the scalp and catch the light where thinning shows; a matte clay reads as thicker from day one, while the minoxidil works on the follicles underneath. It is for men and women aged 18 to 65 with gradual scalp thinning, and a prescriber reviews your answers first because minoxidil isn't suitable for everyone.

Hair grows slowly, so this is the shape of a typical course rather than a promise. Everyone responds differently, and your prescriber sets the pace.

  1. Weeks 1–4

    Settling in

    Twice a day, every day. Some people shed a little more in the first few weeks as resting follicles reset — that is expected, and it settles.

  2. Months 2–3

    Shedding slows

    Fewer hairs on the pillow and in the plughole. Fine, pale new hairs can start to appear where the scalp was thinning.

  3. Months 4–6

    Visible regrowth

    Thickening at the crown and hairline that other people start to notice. Your prescriber checks in on progress and tolerance.

  4. Month 6 and on

    Maintain

    Keep going: the hair kept or regrown is maintained only while you use it, and the full effect can take up to a year. A typical path, not a promise — individual results vary.

    Onto the scalp, not just the hair

    Work it into the thinning areas of a clean, dry scalp as you style, then shape the rest of the hair as normal.

    Hands washed, then keep going

    Wash your hands straight after. Most people see nothing for two to four months, then gradual change; stopping returns the scalp to where it would have been.

Common side effects

  • Itching, dryness, flaking or redness where it's applied
  • Temporary increase in shedding in the first weeks as follicles reset
  • Unwanted hair growth where the product runs onto the forehead, face or neck
  • Headache
  • Rarely: dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or swelling of the hands, feet or face

Do not use it

  • If you are under 18 or over 65
  • If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • If your scalp is inflamed, infected, sunburnt or has broken skin
  • If your hair loss came on suddenly, is patchy, or has no family history of pattern loss
  • If you have heart disease, angina, an irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure, unless your prescriber has agreed
  • If you are allergic to minoxidil

Precautions

  • Keep away from the eyes; rinse with cool water if it gets in.
  • Wash your hands after every application, and keep treated hair away from others until it is set.
  • Don't use other minoxidil products (including Gorilla or The GOAT) on the same skin unless your prescriber has agreed.
  • Washes out with one round of shampoo — don't leave it in overnight unless your prescriber says to.
  • Stop and contact us if you get chest pain, a fast heartbeat, faintness, or swelling of the hands or feet.

Do I need a prescription?
Yes. Cockatoo contains minoxidil 5%, which is prescription-only in this form. Start the free online consultation; a UK-registered prescriber reviews it and your photo ID before it's dispatched.
Does it actually treat hair loss, or is it just styling?
Both. The minoxidil is the same active used in scalp treatments for pattern hair loss, carried in a matte clay so you can apply it as you style. The hold is immediate; the regrowth takes months, like any minoxidil treatment.
Can I use it with Gorilla?
Only if your prescriber has agreed — both contain minoxidil, so they'll set the routine (typically one in the morning, the other at night). Tell us in the consultation if you already use Gorilla.
Is it for women too?
Yes. Unlike Gorilla, Cockatoo contains no dutasteride, so it can be prescribed for women with scalp thinning as well as men — but not during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Will it flake or dry my hair out?
Not if you emulsify it properly between your palms first; almost all clay flaking comes from lumps. The clay base absorbs oil by design, so if your hair is already dry use it sparingly.
