Probiotics are live strains of bacteria that are considered beneficial for the microbiome. When given in adequate amounts, they have been shown to provide health benefits. As well as being helpful themselves, they also metabolise fibre in foods to manufacture short chain fatty acids which themselves provide energy to gut cells, strengthen the gut barrier, regulate metabolism, reduce inflammation, improve heart health, block cholesterol production and act as crucial signals for the gut-brain axis.
Once in the large intestine, curcumin can be converted by Bifidobacterium longum into bioactive compounds, such as demethyl curcumin. These bioactive compounds can enhance antioxidant capacity, preserve cognitive function, modulate inflammation, and improve endothelial health. Other than acting as a bioactive compound, curcumin can also play a role as a prebiotic and encourage the growth of beneficial strains of bacteria in the gut.
