What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, the first weight-management medicine to act on two gut hormones at once — GIP and GLP-1. Together they reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying, and improve how your body handles blood sugar.

In trials, tirzepatide produced the largest average weight reduction of any licensed GLP-1 to date. It's given as a once-weekly injection from a pre-filled pen, starting low and stepping up monthly so your body adjusts gently.

Mounjaro offers and discount codes

PPRX doesn't run a Mounjaro discount code at the moment. Codes on voucher sites or social media may be out of date, or not ours. The price you see for each dose already includes the consultation, the prescriber's review, the private prescription and delivery, so there are no extra fees to add on.

What does bring the cost down is a subscription: it takes £10 off every pen, which is £130 over a year of 13 pens. You can pause or cancel it. On one-off orders, Klarna or Clearpay may be offered at checkout to spread the cost; they aren't available on subscriptions.

Be wary of Mounjaro offered far below the usual price, or sold without questions about your health. The MHRA says GLP-1 medicines should only come from a legitimate pharmacy with a prescription after a consultation, and never from beauty salons, social media or anyone who doesn't ask about your health first.

How long a pen lasts, and how to store it

Each Mounjaro KwikPen holds four weekly doses, so one pen lasts four weeks. You take one injection on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.

  • Before you start a pen, keep it in the fridge (2°C to 8°C). Don't freeze it.
  • Once you've started it, it can be kept out of the fridge for up to 30 days at no more than 30°C. After that, throw it away, even if some medicine is left.
  • You can change your injection day if you need to, as long as there are at least 3 days between two doses.

If you miss a dose

If it's within 4 days of when the dose was due, take it as soon as you can. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one on your usual day. Then carry on once a week as normal.

If you've missed more than one dose, message your prescriber before your next injection, so they can check whether you should carry on at the same dose.

Mounjaro and the contraceptive pill

Mounjaro can make the contraceptive pill less reliable in people who are overweight. That's because it slows how fast the stomach empties, which can affect how well the pill is absorbed.

The UK product information advises switching to a method that isn't a pill, such as a coil, implant or injection, or adding a barrier method such as condoms. If you add a barrier method, use it for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

Mounjaro shouldn't be used in pregnancy. If you're planning a pregnancy, stop it at least 1 month beforehand, and tell your prescriber straight away if you become pregnant.

Switching to or from Mounjaro

Many people come to Mounjaro from Wegovy, or the other way round. Tell us in the consultation what you've taken, the dose, when you last injected and how you got on with it. Your prescriber uses that to decide your starting dose; it isn't always the lowest one, and it isn't automatically the dose you were on before. Mounjaro and Wegovy compared sets out the differences between the two.

What happens when you stop

Weight tends to come back after stopping. In the SURMOUNT-4 trial, everyone took tirzepatide for 36 weeks, then half switched to a placebo. Over the next year, those who carried on lost a further 6.7% of their weight on average, while those on the placebo regained 14.8%.

That doesn't mean you have to take it forever, but it's worth planning with your prescriber: how long to stay on treatment, whether to come down to a lower dose, and the eating and activity habits that help keep the weight off.

Why Mounjaro prices went up in 2025

Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro, raised the UK list price for private prescriptions from 1 September 2025. It said it wanted to address price differences with other developed countries, including in Europe. The price the NHS pays is set under a separate arrangement and wasn't affected.

How much weight can I expect to lose on Mounjaro?
Results vary, but in clinical trials tirzepatide produced an average reduction of around 20% of body weight at the highest dose over 72 weeks. Your prescriber will set realistic expectations for you.
How is Mounjaro taken?
It's a once-weekly injection under the skin (abdomen, thigh or upper arm) from a pre-filled pen, on the same day each week.
Do I have to start at the full dose?
No. Everyone starts at 2.5 mg and steps up roughly monthly. This titration is what keeps side effects manageable.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Access on the NHS is limited and subject to strict criteria. PPRX provides it privately following a clinical consultation, with the same titration and follow-up.
Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
