Returning Controlled Drugs
To arrange the return of unwanted medicines to the Pharmacy the you must telephone and speak to a member of the dispensary team. For controlled drugs this should always be the pharmacist on duty. Please request to speak to the Pharmacist in charge on that day. The Pharmacist will explain the process for returning your medication.
Each return will be made by booking an appointment for the an approved driver to visit your home to collect the returned medication or alternatively, PPRX will send the appropriate packaging to the you to arrange for return by Royal Mail, as inadequate packaging may be unsafe.
Any sharps and clinical/contaminated waste cannot be returned and you should follow local procedures for disposing of these items.
Cytotoxic and hazardous waste, as well as Controlled Drugs, must be separated if possible before returning these medicines for disposal to the pharmacy.
Please be advised, the Pharmacy will require for you to mark the package of unwanted medication as “Z Returns” to allow them to be easily identified. The packaging should not identify the contents as being controlled drugs (or any other drugs).
Please note: If we can not arrange a suitable time for collection; PPRX will provide you with other options to dispose of unwanted or expired medication.
Patients are permitted to return medication to their local pharmacy if required.
